Nearly half of the nation’s garages are attempting to avoid price increases in the face of mounting expenses within the industry…

Garages Resist Price Increases

Nearly half (48%) of both independent garages and dealer workshops are working to avoid raising their prices in the face of increasing operational expenses. That’s according to a survey conducted by the Motor Ombudsman. Three in five of the respondents (59%) said that inflation and increased price costs (due to shortages) would be a significant issue throughout the year.

A significant number of garages (43%) also said that sourcing experienced and qualified technicians remained a significant issue for them. This is slightly better than last year, when 50% reported recruitment issues.

Given that electric vehicles (EVs) have far fewer moving parts, 32% of the survey’s respondents said that the vehicles provided less of an opportunity for growth. Despite this, 44% intend to invest in EV training for their technicians and 23% will likely install EV charge points on their premises.

‘A Multitude of Challenges’

Bill Fennell, chief ombudsman and managing director of The Motor Ombudsman, commented on the challenges garages are facing. He said, “following the festive break, it is a case of picking up from where we left off in 2022, as the findings from our research show that garages and workshops will have to contend with a multitude of challenges this year”.

He continued, “at the forefront of these will be navigating a rise in operational costs at a time when many consumers are feeling the strain on their finances, meaning vehicle maintenance and repairs could take a back seat. As the headwinds facing the economy and households show little sign of abating in the short term, remaining competitive, retaining customers, and finding new revenue channels, will therefore be crucial for businesses in order to deliver a positive bottom line”.
