A Mercedes Charging Network
Mercedes has announced that it’ll be launching its own EV charging network in the future. It aims to have installed some 10,000 charging points by 2030. These will span North America, Europe and China. Some 400 charging hubs, consisting of 2,5000 chargers, will be installed in the US by the end of 2023; with the US receiving its total by 2027. Once complete, Mercedes will expand its network to European and Chinese markets.
Each Mercedes charging hub will consist of between 4 and 30 fast chargers, depending upon the size and the location. All of the infrastructure will support 350kW rates of charging, constructed in such a way that faster rates may become available in the future. The car manufacturer has stated that emphasis will be placed on offering customers a “premium, sustainable and reliable charging experience”.
Open to All EVs
Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer of Mercedes-Benz, told Auto Express “every Mercedes charging hub will be powered by green energy. The first of these hubs will be in North America as we aim to roll out the infrastructure to Europe this year”.
He also clarified that all EV drivers will be able to use the charging network, but that Mercedes drivers will have benefits. He explained, “non-Mercedes owners will have availability of the chargers, but we will work on separate pricing – Mercedes owners should get benefits”. In essence, this likely means that the brand’s drivers will benefit from cheaper prices.
The charging network represents another move on the part of a major automaker to challenge Tesla’s dominance in both the EV and charging spaces; and represents the level of investment being made in the transition to EV motoring. It’s likely that other legacy automakers will follow suit in the not-to-distant future.
